The Garden of Forough (1977)
Description
Originally painted with oil paint on canvas.
Forough Farrokhzad (1934-1967) was an Iranian poet, filmmaker, cultural earthquake and a global pioneer of feminist literature. Emerging in mid-20th-century Iran, she shattered centuries of silence by writing about female desire, independence, and raw human emotion with unapologetic honesty. Despite intense societal backlash, her genius earned her universal reverence. She remains an immortal icon of rebellion and creative freedom.
This portrait visualises Forough’s ultimate poetic philosophy: reimagining the self through nature. Merging her form into a tree, the artwork directly mirrors her masterpiece, Another Birth, where she wrote: “I will plant my hands in the garden / I will grow, I know, I know, I know…” It captures a woman who refused to be contained by societal walls, proving that while her life was brief, her words remain deeply rooted in history, branching across generations. A symbol of resilience, growth, and untamed strength.
